Documentary of late f(x) member Sulli to premiere at Busan film festival

A documentary film featuring late f(x) member Sulli will have its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, four years after her passing. The documentary, titled Dear Jinri, was invited to the Wide Angle – Documentary Showcase segment of the festival, which takes place from Oct 4 to 13, 2023. The film lists Joon Yun-Suk as its director, and has a 101-minute runtime.

Dear Jinri (after Sulli’s real name, Choi Jin-Ri) will feature the final interview recorded with the late f(x) member. The footage was originally recorded in 2019 for the Persona anthology series, with Sulli as the main focus. An earlier Persona anthology series featuring Sulli’s friend and fellow idol IU was released in April 2019 and was a huge hit.

Filmmakers hoped to replicate the success with a new Persona series centered around Sulli. It was originally planned to have five episodes, with Sulli recording material for the first two. However, the entire project was halted following Sulli’s untimely death.

Organizers have described it as a “captivating topic work”, as viewers will have a last look into the thoughts and feelings of the talented and beloved Sulli.

Persona: Sulli revived

Earlier this year news broke that a reworked version of the project, titled Persona: Sulli, would be broadcast on Netflix. At the time, it was reported that the one-part special episode would consist of two segments. The first would be a short film starring the late singer, and the other would be a feature-length documentary film To Sulli.

Fans of Sulli and f(x) responded warmly to the news, with many eager to see the talented star share her story. Persona: Sulli was scheduled to air on Netflix on June 16. However, it was later postponed without explanation. Many now believe this was due to plans to have the film premiere at Busan instead.

According to news reports, organizers have called Dear Jinri a “captivating topic work”. The film sees Sulli speak about her experiences as an artist, and reveal details about her life.

Sulli’s legacy

Sulli’s sudden death in October 2019 rocked the Korean entertainment industry. It was later revealed that she had been suffering depression as a result of cyberbullying. Fans and fellow artists mourned her passing, while lawmakers discussed imposing stricter laws to limit hate comments.

Today, Sulli is remembered as a beautiful and talented performer who still had much to give to the world. Fans are hoping that the documentary Dear Jinri will bring some closure, and pay respect to her memory.
