Actor Ahn Hyo-Seop is a man of strong principles and ambition. In a recent interview with Korean media outlet Sports Kyunghyang, he shared his thoughts on the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own choices. He also spoke about establishing a one-man agency, and his values as an actor.
Ahn Hyo-Seop was recently in the Netflix original series A Time Called You, a remake of the popular Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day. In the series, he plays two characters, Si-Heon and Yeon-Jun, with ages ranging from their teens to their 40s.
On the pressure of portraying such challenging characters, Ahn Hyo-Seop said: “Of course there was some pressure. Comparisons were made to Someday or One Day. Still, I went into it with the mindset that there was nothing I could do and said, ‘Let’s focus on my character and pour my energy into the work’.”
Becoming friends on A Time Called You
He also spoke about acting alongside Jeon Yeo-Been and Kang Hoon. With Jeon Yeo-Been, the two shared many emotional and romantic scenes. He said: “She’s actually an ‘older sister’. I felt like she was very caring and considerate. Thanks to this, I was able to act with ease.”
About Kang Hoon, he noted: “It takes me a long time to get to know people. Kang Hoon has a unique [friendly] expression, and In-gyu (Kang Hoon’s character) and Si-Heon are close friends, so we naturally became close while filming. Even though he is my senior, we were like friends.”
Ahn Hyo-Seop is known for his romantic roles in popular dramas such as Still 17, Dr. Romantic and Lovers of the Red Sky. However, in recent years, he has begun to diversify his roles, such as in A Time Called You.
On his preference for new challenges, he said: “I believe in fate and I think I can create that fate. Actually, I feel like I’ve become a lot more comfortable these days. Because I feel like everything can change because of my choices. It may be just a sip of water, but the moment you decide to be grateful for water, it becomes precious.”
Taking control of his future
In May 2022, Ahn Hyo-Seop left his former agency Starhouse Entertainment, and established his own agency to represent himself. On this decision, he said: “I wanted to take responsibility for my choice. If you work for a company, there are times when you end up doing things you don’t want to do. I thought, ‘Let’s take on a challenge at a time when we can try many things.’ I think we should fully accept the results here. I feel like sometimes practice is more important than you think, so I’m continuing to try.”
Ahn Hyo-Seop is currently in the midst of his Asian tour <The Present Show> HERE AND NOW. He will be making appearances in Hong Kong (Oct 1), Manila (Oct 8) and Japan.
On his first fan meeting, he said: “I was very excited and it was a moment I had really been waiting for. For a while, I doubted whether the people who liked me really existed, but now I have come to realize that. Since I can see [the fans] with my own eyes, I receive a lot of energy. It became a driving force to work harder.”
Ahn Hyo-Seop is a rising star in the Korean entertainment industry, and his interview with Sports Kyunghyang provides a glimpse into his values and ambitions. It’s clear that he is an actor who is not afraid to take on new challenges, and we look forward to seeing what he does in the future.
