New report on Lisa raises fears that BLACKPINK will disband

A report by a Taiwan-based media outlet claims that BLACKPINK member Lisa will sign with a US record label, raising fears that BLACKPINK will disband. The news comes days after the group ended their BORN PINK world tour, and while they are in contract negotiations with YG Entertainment.

It was previously reported that Lisa had rejected two offers from YG Entertainment to extend her term with BLACKPINK. Rumors suggested that around â‚©50 billion (approximately US$37.7 million) was offered to Lisa for a multi-year contract renewal. In a statement on Sept 15, 2023, YG Entertainment said that they “are still in discussions about renewing Lisa’s contract”.

A new offer for Lisa?

An exclusive report today by Taiwan media outlet SETN claimed that “an American record label” had made an offer to Lisa. The report said that the US company was “willing to pay a higher signing fee” than YG Entertainment.

The report also claimed that Lisa was offered “more business autonomy” in her career prospects. She was also offered a 6-album music deal, as well as music, film and television, fashion and performance deals related to entertainment. It added that Lisa would own the copyright to all her music under the new label, “as well as the power to set up her own studio and sign up [artists]”.

The report also adds more fuel to the speculation that BLACKPINK will disband soon. Or at the very least, that Jisoo, Rosé and Jennie will carry on as a trio, with Lisa going solo.

BLACKPINK IN THE NEWS

More freedom as an artist

The terms of the contract in the report matches what fans have observed about Lisa’s recent career decisions. Lisa has shown that she wants greater control over her individual activities.

She is more than capable as a solo artist, with her 2021 tracks Lalisa and MONEY reaching worldwide acclaim. Her music video for MONEY recently crossed the 900 million-view mark on YouTube.

Lisa is also willing to experiment in other music performance genres besides K-pop. She recently raised eyebrows by announcing a five-night show at Paris’ infamous Crazy Horse cabaret. While some voiced objections to the performance, most fans were happy with the development.

Outside of music, Lisa has also a well-known fashion icon, having been appointed the brand ambassador for Italian luxury fashion house Bulgari. She is also the muse and global brand ambassador for French fashion house Celine. On a more personal note, Lisa is also rumored to be dating LVMH heir Frederic Arnault.

What now for YG Entertainment?

At the time of writing, YG Entertainment has yet to issue a comment on the latest report. However, one can imagine that it would have caused some concern within the agency. BLACKPINK’s tour was recently revealed to have made â‚©350 billion (around US$265 million) in total sales, resulting in around US$168.3 million in revenue.

BLACKPINK is clearly one of YG Entertainment’s most successful and profitable girl groups. It remains to be seen what the company will do next to ensure that BLACKPINK, and more specifically Lisa, will continue to stay under their wing.
