In a heartfelt homage to the glorious days of Korean cinema, the Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club takes viewers on a nostalgic journey back in time. The documentary explores an era when young film enthusiasts laid the foundation for the Korean cinematic renaissance.
This documentary will debut at the prestigious 28th Busan International Film Festival in the Wide Angle: Documentary Showcase Section. Directed by Lee Hyuk-Rae, Yellow Door will premiere on Netflix on Oct 27, 2023.
The documentary focuses on the members of the Yellow Door Film Club, a group that once included Lee. Another renowned member was Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. Bong made history at the 2020 Academy Awards when Parasite became the first non-English language movie to win Best Picture.
Yellow Door offers a rare glimpse into the members memories of their time in the club, and their cinematic journey.
The start of Korean cinema’s golden era
The 1990s witnessed a surge in film clubs on Korean campuses, providing young students with a creative outlet and a platform to explore the art of cinema. Among these was the Yellow Door Film Club. In 1993, a young, aspiring Bong Joon Ho was an important member of this little community.
He meticulously curated the club’s video library filled with cinematic masterpieces from around the world. “We were the first generation of cinephiles,” Director Bong reminisced in the trailer of the documentary.
During this time, Bong screened his first short film, a stop-motion animation titled Looking for Paradise, exclusively for club members. “It was the first time I created something with a narrative,” he fondly recalled.
In those early days of Bong’s artistic journey, club members could already sense that he was destined for greatness. “The essence of Director Bong’s films was already present in that film,” one member recounted, while another humorously added: “I knew he’d make it … but not this big.”
