Episode 3
The episode begins on a tragic note. Su-Yeong, one of the Green Home children, dies following the monster attack at the end of the previous episode. The residents are heartbroken, especially her younger brother Yeong-Su. However, they have to press on, and decide to continue their journey on foot.
Back at Bamseom, Ui-Myeong (Lee Jin-Wook), still in Sang-Wook’s body, is finally able to heal himself. It appears that he has drained the blood from the unconscious monster, killing it. Yi-Kyung (Lee Si-Young) then arrives on the scene, revealing that the monster is actually her fiancé.
She breaks down in tears, but stops when the foetus inside her suddenly grows rapidly. She passes out from the pain, as a hidden Ui-Myeong watches on.
Elsewhere, Dr. Lim (Oh Jung-Se) wakes up in the central command briefing room that we saw back in Episode 1. He is presented with the mysterious briefcase from Season 1 and is asked to open it. It turns out that the briefcase is supposed to contain the vaccine, but it is revealed to be empty. The president demands to know its location, but Dr. Lim says that it is safely hidden away.
Arriving at the stadium
The remaining Green Home residents join a large crowd of survivors heading towards the shelter, which is a huge stadium. Ho-Sang (Hyun Bong-Sik) tries to enter but is attacked by the soldiers once they discover his weapons. Chan-Young (Jung Jin-Young) reports for duty at the stadium. We learn that before the monster attacks, he was a pitcher for the local baseball team.
Sergeant Tak (Yu Oh-Seong) has rejoined his team at the stadium, and learns that their unit is being dismissed. He goes to see his superior General Han to get some answers. The general tells him that the situation is hopeless and that he should just leave with his best soldiers.
The survivors are processed before they are able to enter. The infected are taken away and locked up. Eun-Yu (Go Min-Si) notices that Ji-Su (Park Gyu-Young) is badly injured, and there is a tense moment where she is almost rejected from entering. However, an announcement over the PA system says that there will no longer be any checks, and people begin to swarm into the stadium.
Sergeant Kim (Kim Mu-Yeol) reveals his disdain for Sergeant Tak to another soldier. We learn that Sergeant Tak is rumored to have murdered his family. We then cut to a shot of Sergeant Tak standing over the dead body of General Han.
Stadium under attack
At Bamseon, the president shoots Dr. Lim to make him reveal the location of the vaccine. The president addsthat he has come to agree with Dr. Lim’s previous theory about the virus being a curse to kill humanity. He then launches several missiles at the stadium. The missiles kill many people, and the Green home residents are separated amidst the chaos.
Dr. Lim tells the president that he will never find the vaccine, as there was ‘something that he wasn’t able to crack’. The president is about to order Dr. Lim’s execution, when Sergeant Tak and his team burst through the doors.
Sergeant Tak’s team kill the president (who was actually infected) and everyone in the command structure. They then stop the missile attack, and blow up the base.
A deadly battle
Meanwhile, a revived Ui-Myeong begins freeing other monsters from their cells. He finds Hyun-Su (Song Kang) and threatens to leave him there. Hyun-Su breaks out of his cell and the two fight, in an intense no-holds-barred battle.
Hyun-Su manages to deliver a critical blow, but Ui-Myeong realizes that Hyun-Su is unable to kill him. He uses this to his advantage, pinning down Hyun-Su and stabbing him. This causes his arm and body to petrify and turn to stone.
Ui-Myeong tells Hyun-Su that even when he is doing his best, he will never be able to save anyone, and leaves him to die.
New life amidst despair
A heavily pregnant Yi-Kyung manages to wake up in time and escape the base. However, she goes into labor while walking over a frozen lake. Just as she is about to give birth, the ice cracks and she falls into the water. She later wakes up on the surface, and sees that her baby was born infected and is eating its umbilical cord.
At the stadium, Eun-Yu, Ji-Su and Yeong-Su have survived the missile attack, but Ji-Su is trapped underneath the falling roof. Eun-Yu looks on in despair as we hear a crashing sound.
Sergeant Tak and his team return to the stadium and gather the survivors and take them underground. They encounter a mysterious woman, who says that her group can accommodate all of them.
What we thought of the episode
Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 3 really raised the stakes, with the destruction of both the stadium and Bamseon, and the fates of so many people left unknown. What happened to Dr. Lim, and is it really the end of the road for Ji-Su? Will Hyun-Su be able to break out of his stone prison and get his revenge on Ui-Myeong?
We are also intrigued about Yi-Kyung’s baby, as this raises so many questions about how the monsters come to be. We are also wondering about Sergeant Tak and Sergeant Kim, and where they are taking the surviving humans. Hopefully all these questions will be answered in the coming episodes.
