Episode 5
The episode picks up right where we left off, with Eun-Yu (Go Min-Si) facing the mysterious girl (Kim Si-A). At first, Eun-Yu tries to save the girl from Dong-Gi, but stops when she realizes the girl is controlling him. To her surprise, the girl seems to know her name.
The girl tells Eun-Yu that the monsters in the warehouse were dead because of her, despite being ‘harmless’. Eun-Yu tries to stop the girl from leaving, but is attacked by a smaller monster, whom we recognize as the baby released by Sergeant Tak (Yu Oh-Seong) in Episode 2. The girl then walks away with Dong-Gi and the baby.
Return to the stadium
Back at the stadium, we see that Sergeant Tak, Chan-Young (Jung Jin-Young) and Mrs. Oh have survived the explosion. However, the noise has alerted the nearby monsters, and the survivors take shelter underground. Sergeant Tak and his team take up positions around the stadium to defend it.
Outside, Sergeant Kim (Kim Mu-Yeol) and his squad position themselves at a nearby gas station. They blow it up in order to lure the monsters there instead. Sergeant Kim manages to shoot their last pack of C4 , detonating it and killing many monsters. They then return to the stadium, picking up an unconscious Jun-Il along the way.
Chan-Young locks up Mrs. Oh as she has been infected. He apologizes to Sergeant Tak for not watching her and letting her trigger the landmine. Sergeant Tak accepts it, but Sergeant Kim beats Chan-Young, and says Sergeant Tak’s poor leadership caused half their men to die over the past year.
New surprises
We also see that Dr. Lim (Oh Jung-Se) is among the stadium survivors. He has set up a clinic at the stadium, and has turned to alcohol. His only friend appears to be Peter, who is known to the others as a preacher. Dr. Lim is wisely keeping his role in the initial disaster a secret.
Chan-Young brings Jun-Il to the clinic for treatment. He notices a strange scar on Jun-Il’s arm, which interests Dr. Lim. He tells Chan-Young that he will keep Jun-Il there for a few days. Chan-Young asks Dr. Lim if it is possible that a monster could protect humans, but Dr. Lim dismisses the idea.
Outside, Eun-Yu walks back to the stadium on foot. She is watched by Ho-Sang (Hyun Bong-Sik) and Ha-Ni, who appear to be living out in the wild.
Relationships underground
Sergeant Tak runs into Chief Ji (Kim Shin-Rok) who tells him to ‘get rid’ of Mrs Oh. She says that the monsterization will cause a panic among the survivors, but Sergeant Tak reminds her that no one has died from a monster outbreak. He says that she should reassure the survivors instead. She leaves, and we see that Sergeant Tak is injured from the earlier explosion.
We then see Peter talking with Ji-Na, the girlfriend of the runaway soldier Choi. He gives her some medicine from Dr. Lim’s clinic, and appears to have a special interest in her. We later learn that Ye-Seul’s (Yang Hye-Ji) friend Seon-Hwa is interested in Peter, setting up an odd sort of love triangle.
Sergeant Kim goes to see Sergeant Tak to request permission to rescue Choi, but is denied. The two have a tense conversation about their situation, and Sergeant Kim walks away in anger. Elsewhere, the soldiers argue about Choi, with some believing he deserted them.
Meanwhile, the stress of living underground and being an outcast is taking a toll on Yeong-Su. The young boy has become more violent and nihilistic, much to Eun-Yu’s frustration.
Monsters within
At the clinic, Dr. Lim examines Jun-Il’s blood cells, and realizes that he is turning. Jun-Il leaves the clinic to search for his mother, but Dr. Lim retrieves him before he gets agitated. Jun-Il tells him about the mysterious girl who gave him the scar. After conducting a few experiments on him, Dr. Lim decides to provoke Jun-Il in order to trigger monsterization.
Peter visits Mrs. Oh in order to hear her confession. They have a touching conversation about the nature of monsters. Later, Chief Ji goes to see her and they have a cryptic conversation about her ‘leaving’. We also learn that Chief Ji still believes that Eun-Yu killed her husband, but wants to wait for her to turn into a monster before killing her.
Chan-Young follows Eun-Yu to an exit, and finds her feeding a kitten. He reveals that he was following her the day Chief Ji’s husband died, and saw a monster attack him, but not Eun-Yu.
Their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of the mysterious girl, who asks Eun-Yu to follow her if she wants answers. But before Eun-Yu can answer, and injured Yi-Kyung (Lee Si-Young) appears on the scene, with a red ribbon on her hand. She asks that the girl be turned over to her.
What we thought of the episode
Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 5 gave us an insight into the dynamics between the survivors living underground. We can see that the people are only just managing to keep it together, and that tensions are brewing between Sergeant Tak and Sergeant Kim. Dr. Lim’s intent to trigger monsterization could be the spark that ignites everything.
Chief Ji’s motivations are also quite mysterious. We are not sure what her intentions are for Mrs. Oh, and her antagonistic feelings for Eun-Yu might spell danger in the future.
The sudden appearance of Yi-Kyung at the end of the episode was also a huge surprise. Perhaps we can learn more about what has been going on in the world outside the stadium in the next episode.
