Prime Video’s latest fantasy rom-com series, My Man Is Cupid, starring Jang Dong-Yoon and NANA, has been captivating audiences worldwide since its release on December 1. The series, available in Malaysia and over 240 countries, tells the enchanting story between the titular cupid, Cheon Sang-Hyuk (played by Jang Dong-Yoon), who lost his wings 500 years ago, and Oh Baek-Ryun (NANA), a veterinary surgeon whose beauty seems to curse her suitors with supernatural accidents.
As these star-crossed lovers navigate their unique challenges, fate draws them closer, leaving viewers wondering if love will triumph.
HallyuBeat recently joined international press to ask Jang Dong-Yoon and NANA a few questions about their roles in My Man Is Cupid:
Bringing their characters to life
Jang Dong-Yoon shared his approach to portraying Cheon Sang-Hyuk. “Because Cheon Sang-Hyuk is a very fantastical character, I deliberated on how to balance his human and fairy aspects,” he said.
“Since there was a lot of CG involved, I didn’t know how this would turn out. So the references the director showed me helped immensely.”
The references provided by the director also helped NANA, who was playing a veterinarian. “Because my character is [in] a very professional field, there were scenes where I had to be professional, like performing a surgery. So we had a veterinarian on set, who I learned from.”
What drew them to the project
Both actors alo shared why they were drawn to the project. Jang Dong-Yoon was attracted to the script’s light-hearted and interesting nature, interpreted through the fantasy genre.
Meanwhile NANA, a fan of romantic comedies, found the script intriguing, especially with its fantastical elements.
“And most importantly, knowing Dong-Yoon would be playing Cheon Sang-Hyuk made me accept the role. I was curious about our chemistry,” NANA added.
What makes the show special
As My Man Is Cupid focuses on fated loves, the actors also were asked what they thought about the concept of destiny.
NANA expressed her belief in destiny, seeing her collaboration with Jang Dong-Yoon as something meant to be. Jang Dong-Yoon himself said he values personal will more, believing in one’s ability to shape their destiny.
Both actors also shared what made the series stand out from other romantic-comedies. NANA, who plays a veterinarian, quickly pointed out her four-legged co-stars. “I think our series is the only one with this many puppies,” she said. “You’ll see a lot of adorable puppies.”
Jang Dong-Yoon drew attention to the supernatural elements of the series. He said: “There are other fairies that all have their charm, and I think the concept that they live in the real world with humans is interesting.”
Carrying each other
They also opened up about moments on My Man Is Cupid that they found unforgettable. One scene they talked about took place in the first episode. In their first official encounter, Baek-Ryun gets drunk and faints, and is carried on Sang-Hyuk’s back.
NANA said: “Baek-Ryun had to be on his back completely unconscious and I felt so bad for Dong-Yoon.” She went on to say that they shot the scene about 10 times, and that she appreciated Dong-Yoon’s strength.
Jang Dong-Yoon added: “She’s light too, so I wasn’t as stressed.”
My Man Is Cupid offers a refreshing take on the fantasy rom-com genre, with Jang Dong-Yoon and NANA’s performances and chemistry being a highlight for viewers. The series promises to be a delightful journey of love, fate, and magical encounters.
