Everyone is surprised to see Chief Yu Dae-Cheon (Choi Deok-Moon) walk through the door after his violent attack. It is obvious that Chief Yu knows that Senior Superintendant Choi and Commissioner Baek (Kim Min-Jae) are the masterminds.

Later, Chief Yu and Park Young-Han (Lee Je-Hoon) sit down for a tense negotiation with Choi and Baek. Chief Yu reveals that he has documented proof of Choi’s past collaboration with the Japanese. He then shocks everyone by tearing it up, saying that he is willing to give up his investigation and overlook his attack, as long as Team 1 is left alone.

A distraught Park asks Chief Yu why he did that, and Yu assures him that he has other ‘tricks up his sleeve’, and that Team 1 needs to be free to defend the powerless. Park and the rest of his team are moved by their chief’s sacrifice.

Financial crimes afoot

The next day, Park and his wife Hye-Ju (Seo Eun-Soo) head to the temple to ask for blessings for the new year. They come across an angry crowd attempting to attack a family of lepers and manage to stop them. On their way back, a body suddenly falls to the ground in front of them.

The victim worked for a securities firm that was going through some financial difficulties. According to his boss, the victim was being investigated for embezzling company funds. However, not everything adds up.

It appears that the man was beaten to death and thrown out of the window. The team find a suicide note at the scene, which is later determined to have been faked. The victim’s pregnant wife tearfully asks them to clear his name.

Uncovering the truth

Detective Park and his team later discover that a group of lepers who were living near the crime scene saw the killer escape. They track him down to a gambling den, and learn that several securities firms are being used as a front for illegal operations. They also find out that a prosecutor investigating the corruption was also murdered.

The team manages to gather enough evidence and pick up those involved in the two murders. However, Commissioner Baek insists that they turn over the case to the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). The team realize they are being pushed aside, as the mastermind is connected to the government. In the end, they release the mastermind, but manage to arrest the killer and his handler.

The episode ends on a dour note, with Park and Kim Sang-Sun (Lee Dong-Hwi) reflecting on how the mastermind escaped the country, and they were unable to recover the money. They are disappointed by the fact that there are ‘thieves’ still around the country.

An epilogue later reveals that the stock market crashed in 1962, and the culprits were arrested and eventually acquitted.

Episode 7 sees our detectives finally get back to working on a case. Previous episodes dealt with much heavier topics, so seeing them once again involved with an investigation is almost like a breath of fresh air.

This time, the team find themselves going up against those in authority. Halfway through the investigation, they learn that the KCIA is aiding in the manipulation of the stock market. While they were unable to take down everyone involved, they console themselves with getting justice for the murder victim.
