In a shocking turn of events … Representatives of the English jazz-funk band Shakatak have accused ADOR of copyright infringement in NEWJEANS’ latest hit, Bubble Gum. This allegation has sent ripples through the music industry.
The Accusation and Legal Actions
According to a report by Munhwa Ilbo on July 18 KST … WISE MUSIC GROUP, had enlisted a South Korean law firm in June. They have since sent a Letter of Claim to ADOR, HYBE Labels, the Korea Music Copyright Association (KMCA), Sony Music Publishing (South Korea branch), and others.
The letter states, “We have confirmed that the song Bubble Gum, composed and written by 250, Oscar Bell, Sophie Simmons, and Gigi and performed by NEWJEANS, incorporates elements of Easier Said Than Done by Shakatak without permission from WISE MUSIC GROUP. We demand immediate action, including the cessation of Bubble Gum sales.”
WISE MUSIC GROUP further demanded, “We have outlined specific requirements including stopping the sale of Bubble Gum, reporting all profits derived from this song, legal transfer of ownership, a seal, and compensation for damages.” The letter details the components that allegedly constitute copyright infringement.
ADOR’s Response
In response, an ADOR representative stated, “The letter from Shakatak’s legal representatives has been addressed by the law firm representing the composers of Bubble Gum. We firmly believe Bubble Gum did not use Shakatak’s composition without authorization. We have asked Shakatak to provide a credible analytical report with clear evidence of the alleged infringement.”
Shakatak’s legal team has indicated they plan to submit an analytical report soon. However, WISE MUSIC GROUP has yet to take further action.
Upcoming Performance
Despite the legal turmoil, NEWJEANS continues to rise. They are set to perform at the halftime show of the ‘2024 Coupang Play Series’ Premier League match between Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur.
The event, hosted by Coupang Play, will take place at Seoul World Cup Stadium on August 3 at 8 PM KST.
