Yoo Ah-In faces 4 years jail for drug offenses

Once-renowned South Korean actor, Yoo Ah-In, is facing a four-year prison sentence and a fine of â‚©40 million (US$31,000) for drug-related offenses. The actor is currently on trial, and is claiming that the drugs were prescribed for treatment of depression and panic disorders.

The legal troubles for the actor began in March 2024. Traces of propofol, a controlled substance, were detected in his system during a routine traffic stop.

Despite initial denials and claims of medical necessity, the court found sufficient evidence to charge Yoo Ah-In.

A shock to the entertainment industry

Yoo Ah-In first garnered praise for his compelling performances in films like Burning and Silence. He also starred in hit dramas such as Descendants of the Sun and Chicago Typewriter. Because of this, his fall from grace sent shockwaves through the Korean entertainment industry.

Following the drug scandal, Yoo Ah-In was dropped from the cast of season 2 of Netflix’s supernatural action-drama Hellbound. There were also concerns that his appearance in The Match, Hi.5 and Goodbye Earth would be edited or recast.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of South Korea’s strict stance on drug use. While Yoo Ah-In has a chance to appeal the verdict, any conviction is likely to have a significant impact on his career.
