The hit Netflix series Bridgerton is making exciting changes for its upcoming Season 4 by casting Korean Australian actress Yerin Ha as the female lead opposite Benedict Bridgerton (played by Luke Thompson).
In a nod to Ha’s Korean heritage, her character’s surname was changed from Sophie Beckett to Sophie Baek. This is all thanks to showrunner Jess Brownell.
This adjustment reflects the importance of cultural representation while maintaining the character’s core traits from the original Julia Quinn novels.
Yerin Ha’s Role as Sophie Baek
Yerin Ha, best known for her role in Halo, will play Sophie Baek, a maid with a mysterious past who catches Benedict Bridgerton’s eye at a masquerade ball.
In an interview, Ha expressed her connection to the character’s journey of overcoming social obstacles. She added that the name change has empowered her in the role.
The actress praised the showrunner for allowing her heritage to be woven into the character’s identity. She noted that it made the role feel more personal and authentic.
Bridgerton’s Commitment to Diversity and Representation
By incorporating Ha’s Korean heritage into the character of Sophie Baek … Bridgerton continues its tradition of embracing diverse representation within its fictional Regency world.
Ha described the experience as empowering, stating that a simple name change allowed her to embody the role fully.
Fans eagerly await Season 4’s debut in 2026, anticipating the fresh storyline and cultural depth Ha’s character will bring to the screen.
