Former NCT member Taeil has been sent to prosecution, accused of quasi-rape involving an intoxicated woman and two non-celebrity acquaintances. Here’s everything you need to know about the charges and the ongoing investigation.
Quasi-Rape: What It Means Under South Korean Law
In South Korea, quasi-rape refers to sexual acts committed on an individual who is unconscious or too intoxicated to resist. This case emerged in June 2024, when allegations against Taeil surfaced, accusing him of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman.
Two non-celebrity acquaintances are reportedly implicated in the same incident. Despite early rumours suggesting involvement with minors, it has been confirmed that no minors were involved in the alleged crime.
Timeline: From Allegations to Prosecution
The investigation has been ongoing since June when police first launched a probe into the case. On August 28, SM Entertainment, Taeil’s agency at the time, announced his removal from NCT and its sub-unit, NCT 127, citing sexual misconduct.
Many fans speculated that this sudden action signalled the severity of the charges. SM Entertainment later clarified that they were unaware of the investigation until mid-August.
Taeil was officially sent to prosecution without detention on September 12, with reports confirming that the case has progressed into a formal legal process. The specifics surrounding the number of victims and further details remain undisclosed at this time.
SM Entertainment’s Response
Rumours also swirled regarding whether SM Entertainment had attempted to cover up Taeil’s alleged crimes. However, the agency denied these claims, stating that they only learned of the investigation in August.
The decision to remove Taeil from the group followed shortly after.
