Hellbound Season 2 Episode 1 Recap and Review

Hellbound Season 2 returns with a dark, suspenseful premiere that revives its core themes of sin, redemption, and the supernatural. Episode 1 plunges us back into the twisted world of Jung Jin-Su, Detective Jin Kyung-Hun … And the power struggles between The New Truth, Government, The Arrowheads and the mysterious Sodo group.

This episode doesn’t hold back, diving straight into old and new tensions that set the stage for an intense season.

A Sinister New Chapter

The episode opens by revisiting the pivotal moment of Jung Jin-Su’s death, a death steeped in mystery and confrontation. Detective Jin Kyung-Hun confronts Jin-Su, whose intense convictions about sin and punishment make his impending doom both harrowing and symbolic. Jin-Su, who claims he has never sinned, believes his condemnation unjust.

He sees his suffering as a way to instil fear of sin in others. He presents Kyung-Hun with an impossible choice… Accept Jin-Su’s grim reality or expose him, which would implicate Jin’s daughter.

Jin-Su’s Journey Through Hell

As we transition to Jin-Su’s hellish experiences, we witness him being forced to relive traumatic memories. Haunted by visions of his mother, Jin-Su is tormented by the belief that she abandoned him for a married man.

We also learn that Jin-Su’s father was abusive… A factor that likely influenced his mother’s decision to leave and abandon him. This journey through his own hell climaxes as he possesses a man he and Hee-Jung had previously set ablaze. This marks his rebirth in the real world.

The New Truth Weakens, Arrowheads Rise

Miss Sunshine

In the four years since the events of Season 1, The New Truth has weakened, especially after the Bae couple’s ultimate sacrifice to save their child. Their selfless act undermined The New Truth’s teachings, allowing the Arrowheads to gain power.

These extremists driven on by Miss Sunshine offer a different interpretation of sin and redemption, holding chaotic public demonstrations where they aim to “save” sinners by throwing themselves in front of the hell-bound monsters.

Into the fire

In a tense scene, the Arrowheads rally around a man named Jung Gyeong-Seok, a bully condemned to hell. When the monsters arrive, Gyeong-Seok tries to escape, but the mob refuses to let him go.

The Arrowhead mob including Miss Sunshine sees his suffering as an opportunity for redemption, throwing themselves over him, in a sacrificial act of faith. As the monsters’ light descends upon them, the mob sees this as a divine acknowledgement, reinforcing their violent path to salvation.

They were all burnt to death by the monsters.

A Government Conspiracy

As the Arrowheads gain influence, the government grows increasingly concerned that they might destabilize society. The New Truth’s chairman, Kim, worries about the Arrowheads’ growing influence and their potential to replace The New Truth’s teachings.

But Secretary Lee Su-Gyeong presents him with a plan to prevent this: to use a new icon, resurrected Park Jung-Ja, as a beacon of hope and stability. This “new Bae” would counter the Arrowheads and rally the public back to The New Truth’s side.

However, the plan has a hitch. If Jung Jin-su were to resurrect and oppose them, his influence could quickly unravel their efforts. Recognizing this, Secretary Lee sets out to track down Detective Jin, who is believed to be connected to Jin-su’s demonstration and may hold clues to his potential return.

Jin and His Daughter in Hiding

The episode concludes with Jin and his daughter living in secret, away from the public eye. Jin works night shifts, while his daughter seems isolated, glued to her phone.

Suddenly, she suffers a mysterious episode, sparking worry in Jin’s eyes. As she returns to her phone, Jin remains deeply troubled, hinting at the trauma and unresolved tensions that will likely play out in future episodes.
